Area guide
Living in Palmers Green
Palmers Green lies in the south-west of the London Borough of Enfield, with Green Lanes as its main thoroughfare. Enfield Council describes its compact town centre as having a character shaped by food and drink businesses, and Devonshire Square, a pedestrianised public space, was launched there in May 2025. To the south of the Lakes Estate is Broomfield Park, a registered historic park built around an early 18th-century water garden. Until the early 20th century Palmers Green was a small village. The railway arrived in 1871, but the largest local landowners declined to sell land, and much of the area was built after part of the Grovelands estate was auctioned in 1902.
The housing follows that history. The Lakes Estate, between Fox Lane and Alderman's Hill and built between 1904 and 1914, is made up mostly of substantial two-storey Edwardian semi-detached pairs with some small terraces, with shop parades and flats along Alderman's Hill. Broomfield Park is ringed by detached and semi-detached houses of Edwardian, interwar and post-1945 dates. The Lakes Estate is a designated conservation area, and the council's appraisal notes that the name comes from its street names rather than from any historic feature.
Palmers Green has no Tube station. Palmers Green station, on Alderman's Hill in Travelcard Zone 4, is on the Great Northern line, with trains to Moorgate in the City and out to Hertford North and Stevenage. Piccadilly line stations at Bounds Green, Arnos Grove and Southgate are roughly 1.6 to 2 kilometres away in a straight line, and several TfL bus routes serve the area. Palmers Green is in the N13 postcode district.

A little history
Palmers Green was a small village until the 20th century. The railway reached it in 1871, but the Taylors of Grovelands and the Walker family of Arnos Grove declined to sell land for housing, so building followed the 1902 auction of part of the Grovelands estate, with the Lakes Estate developed between 1904 and 1914.
