Area guide
Living in Chingford
Chingford lies at the north-eastern edge of Greater London, in the London Borough of Waltham Forest. Epping Forest runs along its eastern side and is managed by the City of London Corporation, which bought the manorial rights after the Epping Forest Act of 1878. Open areas such as Chingford Plain, Connaught Water and Pole Hill lie within about 1.5 km of Chingford station. Until 1965 the area was part of Essex.
Most of North Chingford grew after the railway arrived in 1873. The council's conservation area appraisal for Chingford Station Road describes large detached and semi-detached Victorian and Edwardian villas on roads such as The Drive, Crescent Road and Forest Avenue, tightly spaced terraced streets near the station, and a Victorian shopping parade on Station Road. Around Chingford Green the council's appraisal records an Edwardian terrace on The Green Walk, and notes that by the 1920s fields had given way to suburban houses such as those of the Chingford Rise estate.
Chingford station is the terminus of the Weaver line on the London Overground, in Zone 5. Trains run to London Liverpool Street through Highams Park, Wood Street, Walthamstow Central and Hackney Downs. There is no Tube station in Chingford; Walthamstow Central, on the same line, is the terminus of the Victoria line. London bus routes also serve the station. Council tax is set and collected by Waltham Forest Council, with a Greater London Authority share on the same bill.
