Area guide
Living in Oakwood
Oakwood lies in the west of the London Borough of Enfield, between Southgate and Cockfosters on the Piccadilly line, with the green belt land of Trent Park to its north. Enfield Council's heritage appraisal for Trent Park describes Oakwood and Cockfosters as the suburbs forming the northern fringe of Greater London, and notes that part of the park is screened from Oakwood by a London Underground depot and a fringe of trees along Bramley Road. Enfield made Oakwood a council ward in its own right from 2022.
The area grew after the Piccadilly line extension of 1933, which the council's characterisation study identifies as crucial to the expansion of speculative housing in this part of the borough. The same study singles out Oakwood and Cockfosters for particularly good examples of inter-war semi-detached housing, with hipped roofs and bay windows, and counts Oakwood, to an extent, among the borough's Metroland centres built around the Underground stations. Oakwood station on Bramley Road is a Grade II* listed building by Charles Holden and Charles H James, with a curved parade of shops on either side of the booking hall.
Oakwood Underground station is in Zone 5. The Piccadilly line runs north to Cockfosters and south through Southgate, Wood Green and King's Cross St Pancras to central London and Heathrow. Oakwood Park, run by Enfield Council, has an avenue of scarlet oaks, tennis courts, a playground, a model boating pond and a pitch and putt course, and the 400-acre Trent Country Park lies to the north. Most addresses are in the N14 postcode district.
